Standardized Testing for Homeschoolers
Oregon statute requires standardized testing for homeschoolers at the end of grades 3, 5, 8, and 10, with some exceptions:
- The first 18 months of homeschooling do not require testing, regardless of the grade level.
- If your child is participating in intramural sports with your district school, testing is required at the end of each grade level.
- If your child has certain special needs, you may opt to provide assessment other than the standardized testing. (See Privately Developed Plan (PDP) Development.)
The required tests include grade-level math (concepts, application, skills), reading (comprehension), and language (writing, spelling/grammar, punctuation, etc.)
Tests may be administered in paper/pencil format, or on a special computer application.
The list of currently approved tests includes the two most recent versions of the following, with publisher information as available:
- Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills – CTBS Terra Nova 3 or Terra Nova NEXT. (Terra Nova is also known as California Achievement Test) (800) 538-9547
- Iowa Tests of Basic Skills: Riverside Publishing Co. (800) 323-9540
- Stanford Test Battery: Psychological Corp., P.O Box 708912, San Antonio, TX 888-433-8435, Education Home School
Tests must be administered in person (not virtually or remotely) by a state-approved tester who is not related to the child or a member of the child’s household.
OWL Society provides standardized testing, PDP Development, and end-of-year assessment for grades 3 through 12. We are currently administering paper-and-pencil tests at all grade levels and will be administering computer-based tests in the near future.
Test results are provided to you for submission to your Education Service District if requested.
We can also provide testing for non-homeschoolers.
